Should you hire a freelancer or agency for your website? I have been on both sides. In 2019 I started alone, building websites and stores for entrepreneurs, artists and musicians. Today I run King Studio AI, a studio with processes, AI automations and a team setup. So this is not theory: it is what I have seen work and fail.
What is the real difference between a freelancer and an agency?
A freelancer is one person who does the whole job (or most of it) by themselves. An agency or studio is a structure: several skills, defined processes and someone who answers even if one person is out. Neither is better by default. It depends on your project, your budget and how much you want to be involved.
When is a freelancer the right choice for your website?
A freelancer makes sense when the project is small, clear and you are comfortable managing it.
- Simple scope: a one-page landing or a basic site with few pages.
- Tight budget: fewer overhead costs usually means a lower starting price.
- Direct contact: you talk to the person who actually builds it.
The risks: if they get sick, busy or disappear, your project stops. And one person rarely masters design, copy, SEO, speed and integrations at the same level.
When is an agency or studio the better choice?
A studio makes sense when the site is a key part of how you sell, or when it has to connect with other things.
- Integrations: payments, booking, WhatsApp, CRM, automations.
- Continuity: someone is accountable after launch, not only until delivery.
- More than a website: SEO, content, ads or a store as part of the same plan.
The risks: higher price, and in big agencies your project can end up with the most junior person. Ask who will actually work on it.
Freelancer or agency for your website: quick comparison
- Price: freelancer usually lower to start; studio usually more complete.
- Speed: depends less on who and more on how fast you deliver content.
- Risk: freelancer depends on one person; studio depends on a process.
- Support: ask both what happens in month three when something breaks.
What should you ask before paying anyone?
These six questions protect you whoever you hire.
- Will the domain and hosting be in my name, with my own access?
- What exactly is included, and how many rounds of changes?
- What is the timeline, and what do you need from me to meet it?
- Can I see live sites you built (not just screenshots)?
- Who maintains it and what does that cost after launch?
- Will I be able to edit texts and photos myself?
If the answers are vague, that is your answer.
What would I do in your place?
If you are validating an idea, start small: a landing that sells one thing well. If the website is going to be the center of your business, invest in a team that also thinks about traffic and conversion. I broke down real numbers in how much a personal brand website costs, and if you are deciding which services to hire in general, this post on hiring an Instagram growth service uses the same logic.
Whatever you choose, make sure you end up owning your stuff. More about what I do on the home page.

Frequently asked questions
Is a freelancer always cheaper than an agency?
Usually the starting price is lower, but compare the full package: hosting, domain, revisions, maintenance and what happens if something breaks after launch. A cheap site that nobody maintains can end up costing more.
Who owns the website when the job is done?
You should. Make sure the domain is registered in your name and that you receive admin access to the site, hosting and any paid plugins or themes. Put it in writing before you pay.
How long does a simple business website take?
It depends on how fast you deliver texts, photos and feedback. A one-page landing can be quick; a full site with several pages and integrations takes longer. Ask for a written timeline with clear milestones.
