“How much do I need to start?” is the question I get the most from people who want to sell online. The honest answer: less than you think to start, more than you think to sustain. Here is the real cost to start an online business in 2026, line by line, from someone who has been building online since buying his first computer at 27.

Prices below are what the main platforms publish as of October 2026. Always confirm on their official pages, because they change.

What does the cost to start an online business include?

The cost to start an online business is the sum of five things: your name online (domain), how you communicate (email and WhatsApp), where you sell (website, landing or store), the tools you use, and how you get visitors (content or ads). Everything else is optional at the beginning.

How much does each piece cost?

1. Domain

A .com domain usually costs somewhere between US$10 and US$20 a year, depending on the registrar. Watch out for cheap first-year offers that renew much higher.

2. Professional email

Google Workspace Business Starter is listed at US$7 per user per month on an annual plan, or US$8.40 on flexible monthly billing. One user is enough to start.

3. Store or website

  • Shopify Basic: US$39 a month billed monthly, or US$29 a month billed annually. On the annual plan they have offered the first three months at US$1 a month. Plus payment processing fees.
  • WordPress: the software is free; you pay hosting, which ranges from a few dollars to a few tens per month depending on quality.

4. Tools

One paid AI assistant is the tool I would buy first. Everything else (design, editing, scheduling) has free tiers to start.

5. Getting visitors

Organic content costs time, not money. Ads cost whatever you decide, and they can burn cash fast without a tested message.

Three realistic budgets

  1. Bare minimum (service business): domain + email + a simple page you build yourself. A few hundred dollars for the first year, mostly in subscriptions.
  2. Solid start: a professional landing or website built for you, domain, email, a WhatsApp assistant answering frequent questions. Here you pay for setup once, then monthly costs.
  3. Store from day one: Shopify, a designed store, product photos, payment setup and a small test ad budget. The most expensive, and only worth it if you already know the product sells.

What are the costs nobody mentions?

  • Payment fees on every sale.
  • Apps and plugins that charge monthly.
  • Your time learning and fixing things.
  • Taxes and accounting, which change a lot depending on your country.

Where would I put the first dollar?

In validation. Sell one thing to real people before building the perfect site. I wrote about the fastest honest ways to start in fastest ways to make money online, and if you are starting while keeping your job, this 30-day challenge is a good plan. It is not easy and it is not fast, but it is doable. More about me on the home page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start an online business with zero money?

You can start selling a service with almost zero: a social profile, WhatsApp and a free payment link. But a domain, a professional email and a simple page cost little and make you look serious, so budget for them early.

What is the biggest hidden cost?

Your time, and paid ads without a plan. Many people spend on ads before they know what message sells. Validate with organic content and direct conversations first.

Is it cheaper to build the website myself?

In money, yes. In time, not always. If you have more time than money, start with a template. If your time is better spent selling, hiring someone can pay for itself.
